FEEDING

How should I transition my pet to BLUEWHALE Pet Foods?

If your pet has a sensitive stomach you should change gradually over a 7-10 day period, adding more BLUEWHALE food to the bowl of your previous food each day. If your pet has an "iron stomach" you can change more quickly, starting with 1/4 BLUEWHALE the first meal, 1/2 BLUEWHALE the second meal, until switched completely. It may take up to 10 days for your pet's entire system to become fully acclimated.

INGREDIENTS

Chicken meal vs. Chicken by-product (nutrition wise)

Both chicken meal and chicken by-product is made from rendered, clean chicken parts. The main difference is the parts of the chicken that are utilized. While somewhat different in makeup, scientific evidence has shown that there is little nutritional content difference in chicken meal vs. chicken by product. There is also no evidence of digestibility differences between the two.

How do you know the ingredients you used in BLUEWHALE Pet Foods are safe?

Why artificial colors?

BLUEWHALE uses artificial colors in some of its foods to enhance their appearance.

Why do we include BHA?

BHA, or butylated hydroxylase, is a preservative that prevents important fats in your pet's food from becoming rancid. Most humans ingest BHA in some form or another every day. This preservative may be found in our cereals, baked goods, butter, or even some beverages. BHA is regarded by both the American Food & Drug Administration and the Center for Veterinary Medicine as safe for use in both human and pet foods in the levels currently found in our foods. It should be noted that pet foods use much lower levels of BHA than human foods.

Why propylene glycol?

Propylene glycol is used in BLUEWHALE dog foods, but not in BLUEWHALE cat foods. Propylene Glycol enables soft, moist pet foods to retain water and gives those products their unique texture and taste.

Benefits of grains (corn/wheat)

The use of corn in pet foods allows us to incorporate starch, protein, fiber, and fatty acids from one source. There are many valuable nutrients contained by corn that complement our other ingredients. Corn is also an excellent source of energy because it contains approximately 80% carbohydrates — in fact, few other ingredients supply as much energy as corn can. What's more, corn can be over 95% digestible. In addition to the high digestibility benefit, corn contains a moderate amount of fat. Another key nutrient that corn supplies is a blend of carotenoids, which are converted to vitamin A, which helps to support vision, skin health, reproduction, and bone and muscle growth. Carotenoids also have a role as antioxidants. So, if these are advantages to corn, then why is there such hesitancy in the market place when it comes to utilizing corn in pet foods? Here are some common arguments against corn:
  1. "The incidence of food allergy to corn is high." This is simply not true. If anyone makes this argument, ask for the research that shows this. Studies show an incidence corn causes rate of 1.5% of adverse reactions to food. This is no different than the incidence rate of reaction to rice.
  2. "Corn is not digestible." Not all animals can digest whole corn well, but when grinding breaks the kernel, the germ (fat), starch (carbohydrate), and gluten (protein) are accessible and digestible (>91% digestible).
  3. "Carnivores like cats and dogs do not do well on a diet high in grains." Firstly, dogs are not carnivores; they are omnivores, meaning they would eat both meat and greens in the wild (though cats are carnivores). Furthermore, there is a misconception around the definition of carnivore. Being a carnivore simply means that to get all of the essential nutrients in the diet in the wild, some animal protein would have to be in the diet. It does not mean that these animals have to subsist solely on meat.

Why high-fructose corn syrup?

High fructose corn syrup, or corn sugar, is a natural sugar derived from Corn. It is a liquid sweetener alternative to sugar, but has the same caloric value. High fructose corn syrup also enables soft, moist pet foods to retain water and gives those products their unique texture and taste. The ingredient is recognized by the American Food & Drug Administration and the Center for Veterinary Medicine as safe for both humans and pets.

Does my pet need vitamin K?

Soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, etc. are excellent dietary sources of vitamin K, and there is not a toxic dose of Vitamin K that can be ingested by your pet. Vitamin K is essential to your pet for normal blood function, and is manufactured by bacteria within the intestines. Without Vitamin K, blood cannot clot.

They also verify our Guaranteed Analysis to ensure the same consistency, high quality and nutrition levels exists in each and every bag.

Check Three – Our 48-Hour Hold Before Release: Check Three is the final step we take before allowing any food to leave our facilities. Every product is held in our warehouse for 48 hours until safety testing is complete. This step confirms that there is no salmonella present and that nutritional values are accurate in accordance to regulatory and formula standards.
